Background of the Study
Vocational education serves as a critical enabler for enhancing the capacities of individuals engaged in the informal sector economy, especially in regions like Akko Local Government Area, Gombe State (Obi, 2023). With a significant proportion of the population depending on informal economic activities, there is a pressing need for tailored training programs that can provide practical skills and foster entrepreneurial growth. Vocational training, by its very nature, emphasizes hands-on experience and technical proficiency, making it particularly suited to address the unique challenges faced by informal sector participants (Eze, 2024). In Akko, the informal economy is characterized by small-scale enterprises, street trading, and artisanal production, all of which require specialized skills that are often not provided by conventional educational systems. The integration of vocational education into the local development framework aims to empower individuals with the competencies needed to improve productivity, enhance product quality, and expand market reach. This educational approach not only addresses the immediate needs of the labor market but also contributes to long-term economic resilience by nurturing a culture of continuous learning and innovation (Adebola, 2023). Recent initiatives have focused on modernizing training facilities, updating curricula, and fostering partnerships with local industries to ensure that vocational programs remain relevant and effective (Umar, 2024). Despite these efforts, the informal sector in Akko continues to grapple with challenges such as limited access to financial resources, inadequate infrastructure, and the absence of formal business management training. These factors impede the ability of informal sector participants to fully capitalize on the skills acquired through vocational education. Nonetheless, success stories in similar contexts demonstrate that when vocational education is effectively implemented, it can lead to improved income generation, enhanced job satisfaction, and overall community development (Lawal, 2023). As the global economy evolves, there is growing recognition of the need to integrate formal training with informal economic practices to create a robust and inclusive economic environment. This study aims to explore the role of vocational education in supporting the informal sector economy in Akko, analyzing its impact on skill enhancement, entrepreneurial ventures, and overall economic empowerment. By addressing current shortcomings and leveraging best practices, the research seeks to offer strategic recommendations for maximizing the benefits of vocational training in Akko Local Government Area (Bello, 2024; Musa, 2023).
Statement of the Problem
The informal sector in Akko Local Government Area, while constituting a major source of livelihood for many residents, faces numerous challenges that hinder its growth and sustainability. A key issue is the limited access to quality vocational education tailored to the specific needs of the informal economy. Although vocational training programs have been introduced to bridge the skills gap, their effectiveness is often compromised by inadequate funding, obsolete training materials, and a dearth of experienced instructors (Chukwu, 2023). Furthermore, there exists a significant disconnect between the curriculum offered by vocational institutions and the practical demands of the informal sector. This misalignment results in graduates who, despite acquiring technical skills, remain ill-prepared to address the complex challenges of running and expanding informal enterprises. Additionally, infrastructural deficits and the lack of supportive policies further exacerbate the difficulties faced by informal sector entrepreneurs. Consequently, many individuals continue to rely on traditional methods that do not foster innovation or business growth. The failure to modernize vocational education in accordance with market needs has led to stagnation in the informal sector’s contribution to the local economy. The present study seeks to critically assess these barriers, focusing on how vocational education can be restructured to more effectively support the informal sector economy in Akko. By investigating the root causes of the current shortcomings and evaluating successful interventions from comparable settings, the study aims to propose actionable strategies that will enhance the relevance and quality of vocational training. Ultimately, addressing these issues is imperative for empowering informal sector participants, boosting local economic performance, and ensuring sustainable community development (Ibrahim, 2024; Suleiman, 2023).
